Toenail Fungus Treatment: Home Remedies Known To Cure Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus usually starts out as a discolorization of the nail itself, and if left untreated can become very unsightly, cause pain and eventual loss of the nail. Over the years, there have been numerous home remedies suggested, and often they have proved quite successful. It is best to use home cures early in the disease before it gets to the point of spreading to all the nails.

Using antiseptics
Home remedies can be used if getting to a doctor presents a problem. There are also a number of nail fungus treatments that can be purchased at the local drug store. Home treatment as a last resort can be a big help, using common ingredients found in the home. The thing to remember is that fungus can be killed using an antiseptic, like bleach, baking soda or even Listerine mouthwash.

Tea tree oil treatment
The use of a solution of equal parts tea tree oil, oil of thyme and olive oil is an excellent remedy. Apply the mixture to the affected nail, leaving on 10-15 minutes. Now use a toothbrush to gently scrub the nail. This will remove the dead fungus and help to get the oil down into the nailbed. This treatment needs to be done daily, including one to two weeks after the fungus is gone.

Using herbs to treat toenail fungus
One little known remedy is to make a paste using Tumeric and water. Apply to infected nail and let dry. Then wash foot and dry thoroughly. Repeat as needed. Oregano oil applied to the nail daily is also good. A solution of equal parts apple cider vinegar and water as a foot soak daily has been known to get rid of nail fungus, as has the juice of a lime or lemon.

Proper care of feet
To prevent a fungal infection, keep the feet dry. Wear cotton socks and well-fitting shoes. If you have been barefooted in a public place, wash your feet and dry them well before putting your shoes on.
